You are in luck if you like to hike and want to see some of the most spectacular views Eastern Canada has to offer. The East Coast is home to many of our nation’s greatest parks and hiking trails. This post introduces you to the top eight trails to visit when you are ready to hike the best East Coast trails.

Fundy National Park

You have a choice of several trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels at Fundy National Park in New Brunswick, starting with the Fundy Footpath. Often referred to as one of the best hikes in the world, the Fundy Footpath hike takes a minimum of three to four days to complete.

The 41-kilometre trail is difficult and includes rivers, ravines, and rugged areas of wilderness. You should only attempt this hike if you are an experienced backcountry hiker, and you should plan to hike with at least one other person. If you are not quite ready for such an intense hike, try one of the park’s moderate or easy alternatives. These include:

Matthews Head: This moderately difficult hike spans 4.5 kilometres and takes one to two hours to complete. You will walk across several fields and an old wagon road before reaching a second-growth forest. The Matthews Head hiking trail is both scenic and historic. Be sure to look for a 19th-century homestead during your hike.

Dickson Falls: This hike is one of the easiest at Fundy National Park, spanning 1.5 kilometres and taking just 30 minutes to complete. At the end of the trail is a waterfall with streams of water that rush over rocks covered in moss. Dickson Falls provides one of the best views East Coast, and people take more pictures of its waterfall than any other in the park.

Green Gables Heritage Place Trails

If you enjoy history, literature, and hiking, you can check all three off your East Coast travel list with a trip to the historic home described in the Anne of Green Gables book series. After touring the house, you can set out on a 2.9 kilometre walk on the Green Gables Heritage Place Trails. The looped route reaches an elevation of nearly 29 metres. The walking difficulty is moderate for this trail in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.

Polly’s Cove

Located in Nova Scotia, Polly’s Cove offers a moderately intense 3.9 kilometre hike that surrounds you with beautiful wildflowers. The looped trail reaches an elevation of almost 74 metres. Next to the trail is St. Margaret’s Lighthouse and several bunkers that troops abandoned after fighting in Canada’s wars. You will have the opportunity to stop at several look-off points to see unique views of the cliffs, rocks, and water below.

Gros Morne National Park

This park offers 20 hiking trails spread out over 100 kilometres. The trails range from simple 30-minute walks to challenging hikes that take a full day to complete. Below are examples of an easy, moderate, and difficult trail at Gros Morne National Park.

Tablelands: This four kilometre walk provides you with panoramic views and the opportunity to see some of Newfoundland’s most unusual rocks and plants. Winter House Brook Canyon marks the end of the trail. You can also branch off for a shorter walk by taking the Serpentine Loop.

Trout River Pond: You will need four to five hours to complete this moderate hiking path that rises to an elevation of 110 metres. The hike takes you past the Trout River Pond, through forests, and then into the wide-open space of the Tablelands. The approximate trail length is 14 kilometres.

Snug Harbour: Snug Harbour is a non-maintained trail that spans for nine kilometres. The total walking time is three to four hours and the elevation reaches a peak of 55 metres. You will see the Western Brook Pond Gorge and have an up-close view of its cliffs that reach heights of 650 metres. Just keep in mind the trail is muddy and in poor condition.

Now that you know where to find some of the best hiking trails on the East Coast, you are ready for your next adventure.
